Geared toward anyone, from custom builders to those just starting out on their tiny home journey, our weekend workshops covers the theory and practice of good building design, taking you through practical exercises so you can start planning and designing your very own tiny house.

Led by Kenton Zerbin, an Edmonton-based teacher and tiny house-dweller who is deeply grounded in Permaculture and sustainable systems design, these popular weekend courses will help you cut through the noise and give you what you need to know in order to design a tiny house that is right for YOU!

Course Content

This introductory workshop will teach you the theory, design fundamentals and practical approaches for preparing to build, buy or live in a tiny house, including:

  • Pros and cons of tiny living (yes, there are cons!)
  • The types of tiny homes, and how to choose the right one for you
  • The basic “rules” of tiny homes, including sizes, lengths, and other limitations
  • Your dream floor plan and how to lay it out in scale
  • Building design topics like “The Big 5”: orientation, thermal mass, insulation, glazing, and ventilation
  • How to plan your project like a master, and know what to do first, second, third…
  • The construction cycle, including framing, insulation, flooring, windows and doors, roofing, plumbing and electrical systems, including on-and off-grid, as well as extensive product reviews.

Coffee/tea and snacks will be provided throughout the day, but students must supply their own lunches. Students should bring their laptop or notepad, and any and all questions about tiny space creation and living!

Kenton Zerbin (www.kzpermaculture.ca) is a passionate teacher and ambassador for sustainable living. For the past 7 years, Kenton has worked across Canada as an educator, designer, and consultant in the field of permaculture and for the tiny house movement.
